Eating Scraps - The Deception of Distraction

(Originally posted on January 17, 2020)

I pulled into the parking lot and began to listen to an audio that Ana wanted me to hear as she went into the exchange office. I noticed a movement behind me, to the left of my vehicle. As I glanced back in my side mirror, I saw her, a homeless woman, desperately clawing through the trash can looking for something to eat. She opened one styrofoam plate after another, looking for anything that someone didn't finish.

My heart hurt.

I opened my wallet to grab 100 pesos. (The equivalent of about $2 USD) It would be enough for her to buy a large enough of a hot plate of food that should last her maybe 2 meals. At the same moment, Ana reappeared. The woman began to walk past Ana's side of the vehicle, so I gave her the pesos to give to the woman.

The woman, so desperately hungry, was so focused on her plate of someone else's leftovers, that she never heard Ana calling after her, time after time, to give her the gift of her own hot plate of food. The woman just kept walking and scarfing down the scraps.

I was beside myself in shock. And I realized that this is what many of us do in our own lives. We readily accept the little that we can find on the side of the road, but God is ready to offer us something so much more fulfilling and much healthier for us. However, living so distracted, we never realize that we could receive an inheritance far greater than the scraps we are picking up and living off of.

Look up, child. Listen. He's calling you by name to offer you something far greater than what you are clinging to. Turn to Him and He will fulfill your every need and desire.
